Dr. Shekar and Dr. Midha to Talk About Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease at Health Expo on March 5

WALTHAM, MA–The 5th Annual Health, Fitness & Wellness Expo announced that Dr. Prem Shekar, MD,  and Dr. Salil Midha, MD will talk about prevention and treatment of heart disease at North America’s largest South Asian Health Expo on March 5 at Burlington Marriott Hotel in Burlington, MA. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Meena Sundaram, MD.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, over 610,000 people die of heart disease every year in the United States–approximately 1 in 4 deaths. The most common type of heart disease is Coronary Artery Disease, with over 320,000 deaths annually. Current treatment options can range from lifestyle changes (e.g. quitting smoking, changing your diet) to medications to surgical intervention in the most serious cases.

Key risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking, as well as lifestyle choices like poor diet and physical inactivity and medical conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

Prem Shekar

Dr. Prem Shekar, MD

Dr. Shekar is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and chief of Division of Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. His clinical and research interests include surgery for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy—a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick—and surgical correction of aortic root and mitral valve disease in patients with Marfan’s syndrome and other connective tissue disorders.

Dr. Salil Midha

Dr. Salil Midha, MD

Dr. Midha is Chief of Cardiology at Melrose Wakefield Hospital. He started his private practice in Melrose, Mass., in 1981 and started the Cardiac Cath lab in Melrose Wakefield hospital. He is a past president of the medical staff at the Hospital and is the current chief of cardiology, director of the Cath Lab and Cardiac Rehab Program at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital. During the past two decades, he has done charitable work to help the poor in India, Africa and Paraguay. Dr. Midha is also president of the Boston Cardiac Foundation.

Meena Sundaram

Dr. Sundaram is a cardiologist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Wellesley. Her specialties include cardiology and cardiovascular disease. In addition, she is a well-known physician who is passionate about music and giving back to community.
